Each one should test their own actions.
Then they can take pride in themselves alone,
without comparing themselves to someone else.
Gal. 6:4

The jewel of contentment is not easily found. Because of the constant parade of things before us, the high esteem in which we hold education, even the shrine we build to fashion, comparing ourselves is second nature. We don’t look at someone who is beautiful and simply appreciate her taste or her poise. We don’t look in magazines as we do fine pieces of art, purely for the experience of seeing something lovely, no we look to see how we might change ourselves, our homes, our families to be more. More beautiful, more successful, better. Everywhere we turn our attention is directed to the bettering of ourselves. Be all that you can be.
We wish to be smart, pretty, the ‘whole package’. Always looking to other people to set those standards. How much better if just accepted the advice of our moms when we were two, “do your best”. If that is all God requires of us, shouldn’t that be enough?
How much more successful would we be if our only goal was to do our best?
What if we would mind our own business and keep our hands busy doing our own work?
If I paid half the attention to my own problems, that I pay now to my sister’s, I would think that I would be better off.
Striving for excellence, with a biblical, godly standard, creates a contentment, a peace inside of us that radiates into society.
Show me a woman who tends to her own business, leaving gossip, needless busyness, and trivial pursuits, and I will show you a content, successful woman who’s works bring her praise, who doesn’t need to compare herself to others.
Can’t we be satisfied with our own beauty, our own work, our own intelligence? If we are busy, giving it all we’ve got, then who is to say it isn’t enough? If you are kind, if you do your best, if you mind your own business, you are good enough for God.
Each one should test their own actions.
Then they can take pride in themselves alone,
without comparing themselves to someone else.
Gal. 6:4
You are SO right about this! Too bad it’s SOOOO hard to do!
Beautifully put!
I enjoy reading your posts.
Hey Olivia,
Thank you for this article. Is striving for perfection knit into our female DNA? Why is this such a struggle for us?
Do you like to do snail mail penpaling? I would like to keep up a correspondence if you would like.
In Christ,
Katie
Thanks! And yes, I think it is knit into our beings…
Facebook message me your address and I’ll attempt to send you a letter this week.
